Julius Schmid, 90, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Brookstone Acres in Columbus, surrounded by family. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15, at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Murry Jay Johnston officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, and continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday. Private family internment will be held at a later date. Julius Schmid was born May 10, 1928 in Duncan, to George and Delora (Fox) Schmid. He attended Monroe High School. He enjoyed farming with his dad until he joined the National Guard. On Aug. 29, 1954, Julius was united in marriage to Doris Mae Ostrander in Clarks. The newlyweds lived for a short time in Genoa before moving to farm in the Silver Creek area. Julius and Doris welcomed daughters Pamela and Wendy and raised them on the farm. Julius retired from farming and began working for the Village of Silver Creek as Utilities Superintendent. While working for the Village, Julius also drove the school bus for the Silver Creek School. He also worked as a security guard with Pinkerton at Becton Dickinson in Columbus. After more than 30 years with the Village, Julius retired and watered flowers at Earl May in Columbus. Julius was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. He enjoyed horses and was a member of the Stromsburg Saddle Club. He also liked to fish, garden, dance, and never met a stranger. Julius received the AKSARBEN foundation 'Good Neighbor Award'. He loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Julius is survived by daughter Pam (Donald) Schultze of Columbus, daughter Wendy (Loren) Mangelsen of Bassett, grandson Mick (Jill) Smith of Columbus; granddaughter Ashley (Matt) Beier of Ripon, California; granddaughter Molly (Rob Stevens) Mangelsen of Madison; great-grandchildren Shelby and Austen Smith, Payton Lotspeich, and Brianna Beier; and sister Bethene Smoots of Columbus. Julius was preceded in death by parents George and Delora Schmid, wife Doris Mae Schmid, brother Paul Schmid, sister Elva Church, and sister Thelma James.
