Bio

Paul Schmid, 88, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, November 24, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Columbus. The funeral service will be Saturday, November 29, 10:00 A.M. at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Rev. Murry Jay Johnston officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by the Monroe American Legion Swanson Post 322 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 9:45 A.M. Memorials may be directed to the Monroe American Legion or the Monroe United Methodist Church Paul was born in rural Platte County, Nebraska, on January 28, 1926, to George and Delora (Fox) Schmid. He attended country school south of Monroe before graduating from Monroe High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army on March 3, 1945, and served 14 months in the Philippine Islands during WW II. After the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Paul served the rest of his time in Tokyo, Japan before being honorably discharged on December 3, 1946. After returning to Monroe, he joined the American Legion where he was a member for 69 years. On April 5, 1955, Paul was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jaqueline Marie Mustard in Clarks, Nebraska. Paul was a volunteer fireman and first aid instructor for 35 years. He was commander and admiral in the mythical Navy of the great State of Nebraska. He was also a charter member of the Monroe Lions Club. Paul is survived by: Son: Douglas (Lisa) Schmid of Rapid City, SD Son: David Schmid of Tucson, AZ Daughter: Sandra (Scott) Gottsch of Genoa, NE Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren: Tim (Kim) Jenkinson, Trey and Jaedon Kelly (Nick) Spitz, Patience, Charley, and Reaygan Megan (Patrick) Gildea, Maggie and Jackie Courtney Gottsch Sister: Elva Church of Clarks, NE Sister: Bethene Smoots of Columbus, NE Brother: Julius (Doris) Schmid of Columbus, NE Paul was preceded in death by: Parents: George and Delora Schmid Wife: Jaqueline Schmid on January 22, 2002 Daughter: Christine Jenkinson Granddaughter: Trisha Jenkinson Sister: Thelma James
