CLARKS — Elva Mae Church, 85, of Clarks died Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at Litzbenberg Memorial Long Term Care in Central City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Solt-Wagner Funeral Home, with Pastor Janice Farrell officiating. Burial will be in the Bureau Cemetery near Pierce Chapel. Elva was born on Dec. 2, 1931, to George and Delora (Fox) Schmid in Genoa. She grew up in the Monroe area and attended Monroe High School, graduating in 1949. She then attended Fremont Teacher’s College. She went on to attend numerous other business schools relating to the banking industry. She married Jack Church on April 4, 1953. Elva taught at a country school in Swede Home. The couple began farming in Polk County in 1954, later moving to Merrick County where they farmed for three years before moving back to Polk County to the Newton Dexter farm. In their early married life, Elva taught country school for a total of seven years and worked as a clerk for Wm. Douglas & Co. for five years. In August of 1963, she began working as a teller-bookkeeper at the Bank of Clarks. In January of 1971, she was appointed assistant cashier and in 1975, she was named cashier. She continued to work at the bank, where she sat on the Board of Directors. She was employed at the bank for 50 years. Elva was a member of the Clarks United Methodist Church. She was also a member of VFW Auxillary in Clarks and Nebraska Bowling Hall of Fame. She enjoyed hunting, golfing, bowling and watching Husker athletics. She especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Carole (Duane) Buller of Clarks; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Church-Walford of Osceola; four grandchildren, Walter (Stacey) Church of Brule, Michelle (Andy) Rice of St. Libory, Brian (Megan) Buller of Clarks and Dawn Buller of Clarks; two great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; a son, Bob “Rudy” Church; a sister, Thelma James; and a brother, Paul Schmid.
