Bio

Marvin Vaughn Scharff, 94, of Hastings, formerly of Norman, died Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings after a stroke. Services were held Saturday, June 2nd at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Christopher Hazzard officiating. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery with military honors by the Minden American Legion and Heartwell Veterans of Foreign Wars in conjunction with the U.S. Navy Honors Team. He was born July 21, 1923, in Franklin County to Ernest and Lena (Lammers) Scharff. He was baptized on Aug. 26, 1923, at Zion Lutheran Church in Upland. On Oct. 31, 1937, Reformation Sunday, he publicly professed his Christian faith through confirmation at Zion Lutheran Church in Upland. Marvin grew up on a farm southwest of Upland until age 13 when his family moved to a farm south of Norman. He graduated from Norman High School in 1941. Marvin helped his father and farmed until 1944 when he was drafted and became a master of arms in the U.S. Navy. He served 13 months overseas. In June 1946, Marvin was discharged and returned to farming in the Norman area. He met his future bride, Reatha Carlson, at a dance in Heartwell on Sept. 25, 1943. They were married at Bethany Lutheran Church near Axtell on April 26, 1947. Marvin and Reatha farmed west of Norman for nine years and north of Norman for 30 years, until moving into Norman in 1983. Marvin raised and milked 20 to 30 dairy cattle from 1964-70. After selling the dairy cattle, he hauled gravel for Kearney County for 12 years. He served for six years on the Norman Public School Board. Marvin farmed and also worked at Norman Elevator from 1983-85. He worked for Farmers Union Co-op from February 1985 until July 1990. In December 1986, Marvin retired from farming but continued to help other farmers during harvest and spring planting. After moving to Norman, he served on the Norman Town Board for a number of years. Marvin was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren, grandchildren, family and friends. He enjoyed dancing with Reatha; playing cards; horses; gardening; watching movies, especially westerns; reminiscing; and reading letters that he had sent and received while he was in the service. Marvin still had over 500 letters that he and Reatha had written while he was in the Navy. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen Ann and Roger Nelson of Hastings, Karmen Sue and Tom Sears of Kearney and Karlene Marie and Gary Reed of Juniata; eight grandchildren, Amanda Nelson of Lyons, Colo., Philip Nelson and wife Megan of Hastings, Collin Sears and wife Macy of Overland Park, Kan., Connor and Kendra Sears, Creighton Reed and wife Shelby, and Breckon Reed and fiancée Kaylee Fike, all of Kearney, and Shaylee Reed of Juniata; two great-grandchildren, Ellie and Luke Nelson of Hastings; sister-in-law, Erma Jean Scharff; and several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
