MINDEN — Verlene Maxine Holsten, 90, of Minden died Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Kearney County Health Services-Long Term Care in Minden. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. John Carrier officiating. Burial will be at Minden Cemetery. Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of the arrangements. Verlene, daughter of Ernest and Lena (Lammers) Scharff, was born Dec. 26, 1924, in Upland. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She lived out her faith and was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden for many years. Most of her childhood was spent in the community of Upland. She grew up on a farm alongside her brothers, Marvin and Delmar Scharff. In 1941, at age 16, she graduated from high school. Shortly thereafter, with World War II quickly approaching, she became a teacher. She taught for many years before she received her education degree from Kearney State College in 1973. Verlene was a natural-born teacher and thoroughly loved her career. She taught for a total of 33 years, including at Eaton, Snowflake, Norman and Holstein schools, until she retired in 1994. Verlene was blessed with three living children, Richard L’Heureux, Calvin L’Heureux and Sheryl Whitefoot. From these she was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Verlene was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Holsten; brother, Delmar Scharff; infant son, Joseph L’Heureux; and infant great-granddaughter, Melinda Ingram. She is survived by her brother, Marvin Scharff; children, Richard L’Heureux of Roseland, Calvin L’Heureux and wife Erma of Lincoln and Sheryl Whitefoot and husband Brent of Kearney; grandchildren, Lisa Ingram and husband Matt, David L’Heureux and fiancée Hope, Tom L’Heureux, Michael L’Heureux and wife Aveda, Jennifer Daake and husband Mike, Brian L’Heureux and wife Amanda, Mark L’Heureux and wife Kathy, Alexa Grzywa and husband Brandon, Justin Whitefoot and wife Jill, and Tana Whitefoot; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Verlene lived a life of faith in our loving Savior. She found her greatest joys in her family. Her heart was set upon caring for those around her. She will always be treasured in our memories.
