Reuben Doerneman, 85, of Howells passed away on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in West Point. Reuben Herman Doerneman was born to Theodore and Amelia Doerneman Febuary 5, 1932 in West Point, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm outside of town. He attended school through 8th grade at St. Aloysius School in Aloys, Nebraska. His first three years of high school were spent at Conception Seminary in Conception, Missouri. In 1949, he graduated from Guardian Angles Catholic High School in West Point, Nebraska. In 1950 and 1951 he worked at Petricek Hardware in Howells, Nebraska. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Right Gunner on a B-29 named the "Ten Scents" and participated in 27 missions during the Korean war. He married Arlene (Hegemann) on August 2, 1955 and farmed near Howells, Nebraska for three years. By 1960, he received an Associate Degree in Electron Engineering from Radio Engineering Institute in Omaha. He worked for RCA service Company in Omaha until 1961. He worked for two years in Denver on the first missile into space for the Martin Marietta Company. In 1964, he purchased the hardware store from Mr. Petricek and it became Doerneman Hardware for the next 38 years until his retirement in 2002. He remained in Howells with his wife, Arlene, after retirement until his death. Reuben and Arlene had seven children: Jeff (Doris) Doerneman of Gilbert, AZ; Randy (Gretchen) Doerneman of Norman, OK; Doug (Paula) Doerneman of Omaha, NE; Russ (Lori) Doerneman of Goddard, KS; Deb (Ray) Matthes of Westminister, CO; Lois (Pat) Diederich of Elkhorn, NE; Linda (Wade) Stahlecker of Fremont, NE; as well as 24 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren.
