Bio
Earl H. Wegener, 92, formerly of Humphrey, died Wednesday, September 25, 2013, in Columbus. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September, 28, 2013, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey, with Father Patrick McLaughlin officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in Humphrey. Visitation will be Friday, 4-8:30 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday from 9-10 a.m., all at the church. Earl was born on July 25, 1921, in Cornlea, to Ben and Dora (Brandl) Wegener. He attended Sacred Heart School in Cornlea. On June 12, 1947, he married Helen G. Preister at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cornlea. He farmed with his wife Helen near Cornlea and with retirement moved to Humphrey. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from April 5, 1945, to August 21, 1946. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 261 and the Holy Name Society. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey. Earl enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren especially teasing them. He also liked to play cards. Farming was his passion and he enjoyed discussing it and keeping up with what was going on in the business. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen, of Columbus; children, Joyce (Richard) Strnad of Columbus, Don (Ginger) Wegener of Norfolk, Nancy (Jerry) Killham of Columbus, Pam (Larry) Kauffman of Columbus, Jane (Terry) Pfeifer of Madison, Sam Wegener of Norfolk, Bill (Shirley) Wegener of Platte Center, and Ted (Jackie) Wegener of Humphrey; 31 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; brothers, Emmert Wegener of Columbus, Mylen (Loretta) Wegener of Humphrey; sisters, Gladys (Gene) Pfeifer of Humphrey, and Colette (Alvin) Bierman of Albion. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Amy Pfeifer and Spencer Wegener; brother, Lee Wegener; and sister, Bertha Wiese.
