Richard was born on November 11, 1920, and was the son of Richard and Rosie Gaas of Caldwell, Texas. He was one of 14 children and worked on the family farm near Caldwell. He served in the United States Army during World War II for 3½ years and was discharged on December 11, 1945. He received the rank of Sargeant. Upon returning to Caldwell, he met and married Erma Mary Heine on June 28, 1947. They were married for 66 years and resided in Bryan, Texas, where they raised two children, a son, Richard Ronald (Ronnie) Gaas and a daughter, Peggy Ann Gaas Stevens. Richard was a charter member of Faith Church in Bryan. Richard trained through the GI Bill and worked for Lilly Ice Cream Company. In April 1962, Richard and Erma started their own business, Gaas Refrigeration. In 1984, the business was purchased by his son and Richard continued to work with the company and helped with the expansion of the business until his retirement. He continued to visit the office and enjoyed having a cup of coffee with his son and employees. Following his retirement, Richard focused on his real passion, gardening and raising cattle in Robertson County. He frequently visited with friends and family and shared the vegetables from his garden. Richard and his wife, Erma moved to Calvert, Texas, near his son and daughter-in-law, where he remained until his death. Richard loved gardening, visiting with friends, family, dancing, and music. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Richard and Rosie Gaas, his beloved daughter, Peggy Ann Gaas Stevens and numerous brothers and sisters.
