Bio

Death of Mrs. Mary E. Hatfield. The life of the companion of Mr. S. Hatfield departed from her earthly abode at Spring Grove, Brown county, Friday, June 24th, at 6:30 p. m. She suffered much all spring from dropsy until death finally brought deliverance from pain and anguish. Mrs. Hatfield was born in Ross Co., Ohio, May 11, 1830, and came to the territory of Kansas in the spring of 1855. She was among the first settlers of Brown county. It is claimed that she was the first white woman who spent the winter in Brown Co.   Mr. Hatfield has lived in the beautiful natural grove on Spring Creek, called by the U. S. Surveyors, Spring Grove for thirty-two years. They passed through all the hardships and privations of a pioneer life. Mr. and Mrs. Hatfield united with the Congre-gational church of Fairview in February of 1880, and during her late three or four months of trying illness, her trust in Jesus was her comforting source. She leaves to mourn her departure a bereaved husband, 8 children, their wives and husbands and 10 grandchildren. She was buried in the Fairview cemetery Saturday afternoon, followed by the largest funeral procession ever witnessed in Walnut twp., an evidence of sympathizing friends for the bereaved and departed.
