Sturgill Funeral Homes, Coeburn, Virginia obituary Kenneth Pickford (Pick) Stallard, 94, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at his home. Born in Coeburn, Virginia; he was the youngest child of Jerry Andrew Stallard and Grace Cyphers Stallard. He was one of four children, all of whom have predeceased him; his sister, Lotrus E. Stallard Blevins was the first child; Oswald C. (Budge) Stallard the second child; Jack D. Stallard the third child and last was Pick. Pick was married to Rita Jo Dingus Stallard for 68 years. Rita predeceased him on March 13, 2014. Pick & Rita were inseparable couple, and each enjoyed a full life and many good times and memories brought about by tremendous work ethics and they shared those good times with family and friends. Pick attended Coeburn High School and upon graduation in 1943 joined the Army Air Corp and served in World War II as a “belly-gunner” on a B-24 Liberator Bomber. He flew 28 missions over Germany and obtained the rank of Staff Sargent. Upon discharge he entered Emory & Henry College and graduated in 1949. He was an enterprising businessman starting in Coeburn, then Richmond and finally in Manassas where he worked and retired from Fairfax County School System. Upon retirement Pick and Rita moved to Tellico Village near Knoxville, Tennessee where they both enjoyed playing golf at the course at which their home was located. Their final move was to Abingdon in 2012, and lived out their lives there. Pick was very active in the Lions Club and was also a Shriner. He was a man of honor, integrity and patriotism and a true gentleman. Pick is survived by the niece and nephews of his sisters and brothers; Linda Eakin and husband, Richard; Jack Stallard JR and wife, Judy;Jerry W. Stallard and wife, Brenda; Jeffery Stallard; Larry A. Blevins and wife, Carla, and G. Kirby Blevins and wife, Alice Ann; as well numerous nieces and nephews from Rita’s side of the family including the families of J. Scott Dingus, Sheila Dingus, E. Ray Dingus, and Lois Haynes. We need to recognize and thank Marty Large, his wife, Charlene, and their two daughters, Katheryn and Kimberly for their visits and compassion over the last several years. We also need to thank his caregivers, Patty Eller, Donna Dunford, Betty Stroup, Barbara Skipper, Teresa Sierra, and Lucille Smith. Their love and compassion for Pick will never be forgotten. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 23, 2017 12 noon to 2 P.M. at the Sturgill Funeral Home 310 6th Street NW Coeburn, VA. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 P.M. in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel Coeburn with the Rev. R.L. Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Acres Cemetery Coeburn, VA. with Military Graveside Services provided by the Local VFW members and the Virginia National Guard Honor Team.
