Bio

VIOLA JEAN PHILBRICK HOPKINS PINNEY PUBLISHED in The Montrose Daily Press, Montrose, Colorado: Genuinely Loved People, Life, and All Her Grandchildren. March 11, 1918 - Aug. 12, 2005 MONTROSE - Viola Jean Hopkins Pinney, of Montrose, died Friday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2005, at her home in Montrose at the age of 87. Viola was born in Fairfax, S.D., March 11, 1918. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Harrison Philbrick and Amelia Teresa Stille, and one brother, Theodore (Teddy) Philbrick. Viola spent her childhood on the family farm and attended school in Ord, Neb. Viola married Archie Francis Hopkins, Jul 11, 1939, at Loop City, Neb. Vi and Archie moved from Nebraska to Olathe, Colo., in 1954 and then to Montrose, Colo., in 1957 where she resided until her death. Archie preceded Viola in death on July 11, 1965. A second marriage to Allen Pinney ended in divorce. Viola worked at the Golden Crust Bakery for six years, and remained there after it was bought by City Market for another 20 years until her retirement. She traveled extensively, seeing all states west of the Mississippi except North Dakota, and also visited Mexico, Hawaii and Canada. She was a member of the Emblem Club, and attended Menoken Christian Church. Vi's genuine love for people, life and all her grandchildren was well known throughout the community. Her memory and attention to detail was marveled at as she shared her stories and heritage. An important part of Viola's life was her family in Nebraska where she visited often. Many of them also came to Colorado to see Vi. Vi loved to dance and play cards. She would take her grandchildren with her to dances and taught them how to play cards. Vi's hobby of photography will be cherished by her family. Viola opened her heart and home to everyone. The number of people who have shared a card game, cup of coffee or a meal in Vi's kitchen are too many to count. Vi loved to visit, no one was a stranger. Her large circle of family and friends will miss her gift of giving of herself. She was so loved by everyone.
