Bio

God’s heavenly choir gained another singer with the passing of Angela Louise Scarmardo Fredericksen. Angela passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the age of 88. Angela was born February 7, 1929, in her home next to San Salvador mission in Caldwell, Texas, to Sam Carlo and Josephine (Maglitto) Scarmardo, whose roots trace back to Poggioreale, Sicily. She grew up in a farming community raising cattle and cotton. The second oldest of six children, she helped raise her younger brothers and sisters. She loved working with her dad in his grocery store next to their home. Angela was a talented singer, and during her time at Caldwell High School and beyond, she was part of Katy’s chorus and sang in the church choir in addition to working with her sisters in providing music for service clubs and the Cadet Club at the Bryan Air Force base. Angela met her husband Carl when she was the maid of honor at her sister Marie’s wedding to Carl’s brother Paul. Carl was the best man. Sparks flew, and six short months later the two were wed. They were married in the first wedding ever performed at San Salvador Church in Caldwell on May 3, 1958. During their almost 58 year marriage, they were blessed with three children. As an Air Force wife, she followed her adoring husband, Carl, all around the US, and Angela spent a lot of time with her children. She was a devoted mother who was involved with many of the extra-curricular activities her children participated in throughout school, often helping to sew costumes. She was known by her children’s friends as Momma Fred. No matter where the family lived, Angela was always involved in church, especially in the choir, and taught her children a love for the Lord. After Carl’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned to the Brazos Valley, settling in Bryan. Angela worked at a bridal boutique as a seamstress, and then went on to work for Texas A&M in the Department of Architecture and also the medical school. In her free time, she continued to sew, cook, garden and bake pies. Her favorite of all the holidays was Easter, and Angela hosted a gathering for the whole family each year. Anyone who was in need was also welcome at her table. Her spiritual nature manifested in a very generous nature. Her pride and joy became her 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren who all called her “Granny Annie.” Angela will be reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Carl Eric Fredericksen, who passed away last year. She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law Anita and Karl Kapchinski of College Station, her son and daughter-in-law Pete and Stacy Fredericksen of San Antonio, her son Scott Fredericksen of Bryan, her grandchildren Kris and Jessica Kapchinski (and children Jennifer, Kade Louis, and Kristopher Brandt), Kyle and Meredith Kapchinski (and children Kaleb and Karlee), Kevin and Amanda Kapchinski (and children Lena Rose and Kent), Tyler Fredericksen, her sister and brother-in-law Marie and Paul Fredericksen of College Station, her sister and brother-in-law Lucille and Henry Batten of Bryan, her brother and sister-in-law Sam Carl and Linda Scarmardo of Bryan, and brother and sister-in-law Steve and Daune Scarmardo of Richmond, Texas. To honor Angela’s life, a celebration gathering will held on Sunday, November 26, 2017, from 5-8 PM at Hillier Funeral Home of COLLEGE STATION with a vigil service and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy in Song to begin at 6:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, November 27, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan with interment at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made in Angela’s name to either Hospice Brazos Valley or St. Joseph Catholic School.
