Bio

Daisy Marie Smith, 90, of Bryan, Texas, passed away on June 7, 2017. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., June 9, 2017, at Hillier Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m., June 10, 2017, at Hillier Funeral Home, in Bryan with Clinton Everitt officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Daisy was born in Anson, Texas, to the late John Jackson Wells and Plumer Loraine (Varner) Wells. Her childhood was spent in Garza County working on her parent’s farm along with her eight siblings. Although her family was not wealthy, they had something much more valuable; they had the bond that most families will never know or experience. The time spent on the farm brought them together and taught them to love in ways most family never had the opportunity to know. During Daisy’s teen years she began working in a café as a waitress where she met Oran "Slim" Weldon Smith. Weldon was a tall drink of water, and it was love at first sight. They were married June 15, 1945, and for 29 years the two shared a beautiful and blessed marriage until Weldon’s passing on May 24, 1974. Daisy experienced many trials in life, one such being the tragic loss of her 11-year-old son, Bobby. Though it all, Daisy never lost her faith, she maintained her relationship with Christ and set an example for her 4 other children. Daisy was very involved in her church; she loved her position as a Baptist Sunday school teacher and being an active member of Highway Baptist Church in Huntington, Texas. Daisy’s greatest joy was her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Nothing brought her more happiness than to be surrounded by her family and those she loved most. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Smith; a son, Bobby Jack Smith; grandsons, Weldon Leon Tennison and Raymond Smith; great-grandson, Colt Walker Catalina; eight siblings; and bluegrass partner, Leroy Patterson. Survivors include her son, Weldon Joe Smith and his wife, Rachel, of Huntington, TX; daughters: Daisy Marie Oehler and her husband, Dennis, of Llano, Susie Catalina and her husband, John, of College Station, and Kim Underhill and her husband, Larry, of Mesquite; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Opal Carmichael, of Lincoln, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
