Bio

Joe W. Filer, 101, of West, formerly of Tours, passed away Monday morning in West Rest Haven. Rosary will be recited 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin's Catholic Church with Msgr. Isidore Rozycki as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Martin's Cemetery in Tours. Mr. Filer was born March 4, 1905, in McLennan County, to Julius and Vickie Wanke Filer, and had lived in the Tours-West area all his life and was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours, where he served as an usher for a number of years and a member of St. Martin's Society, also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2305 of West, having been initiated in 1924 and a member of Catholic Life of Tours. He married Catherine Berger on Jan. 26, 1932, at Tours. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 7, 1991. He is survived by his sons, Matthew Filer and wife, Lillian of West, and Wesley Filer and wife, Judy of Waco; four grandchildren, Raymond Filer and Richard Filer of West, Carol Filer of Austin, and Anne Burrough of Winston Salem, N.C.; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the St. Martin's CCE Program or to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
