GREELEY — Harold J. “Lefty” Thompson, 97, of Greeley passed away Monday, April 24, 2017, at Greeley Care Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. James Janovec will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Greeley. Military honors will be provided by the Charles E. Martin American Legion Post 186 of Greeley. T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home of Greeley is in charge of arrangements. Harold J. was born May 24, 1919, in Greeley County to Clifford and Emeline (Kinsella) Thompson. He was raised in Greeley and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. In 1944, Lefty joined the United States Army. He served in the European Theater during World War II. Following the service he returned to Greeley. Lefty drove a truck and heavy equipment. He enjoyed the large diesel motors and spent the majority of his career at Greeley County until his retirement. In June 1947, Lefty was united in marriage to Rosemary (Gray) Stevens. To this union a son, Ron, was born. Rosemary passed away in 1975 and he later married Wilma (Larsen) Barnes. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 186. He enjoyed playing cards and pool and was an avid baseball fan. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Colleen “Coke” Thompson of Trenton; a stepson, Darwin Barnes and his wife, Alice, of Grand Island; three grandsons, Clifford Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Ryne Thompson and John Thompson, both of Greeley, Colo.; a sister, Helen Zahm of Omaha; and two sisters-in-law, Marcella Thompson of Greeley and Catherine Thompson of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Rosemary and Wilma; an infant sister, Rosella Thompson; an infant brother and sister; and five brothers, Whistle, Jerome, Frank, Gerald and Bill.
