Jacob was the grandson of the immigrant Peter Studebaker , and his second wife Susannah . His parents, Peter and Mary Miller Studebaker, married, had a single son, sold off Peter's inherited lands and moved to Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co. PA. Jacob married Salome and they had their first child Peter. As his Father had died and his Mother remarried, Jacob settled the family inheritance and left PA. He rafted with his wife, son, and family possessions on the Ohio and settled in Shelby Co. KY, where he bought land. Within a year, in 1799, he had rafted on down the Ohio to the Green and the Mud, where he purchased extensive acreages east of present day Penrod. He returned to PA to buy a few barrels of nails and other building supplies and rafted back to KY. He then built a two-story log house sheathed in planks that stood for nearly 100 years. The picture is near its last years, but another house was built on the same foundation,(GPS 37.1127 -86.9677). Jacob and Mary had 14 children, 11 married and had children,(54 grandchildren). As Jacob shortened his name to Jacob S. Baker in about 1815, that's the start of lots of Muhlenberg KY Bakers. He was a very successful farmer and he would build a raft, stack it with produce, and go to New Orleans via the Mud, Green, Ohio, and the Mississippi. After selling the produce and raft, he would return to KY on foot. He served in the local militia as a Captain.
