Samuel was the third son (seventh child) of Jacob and Salome. He was born a Studebaker as Jacob did not change his name until the middle teens. About the time of his marriage to Nancy, Jacob helped him buy a farm near Bremen. Nancy and Sam had seven children, six which lived to adulthood. The last born, Sarah died at the age of three months, two months after her Mother had died. Thus, Sam was left to farm and raise his children alone. Then, the Civil War came, Sam and his two older sons, Elias and Ephriam, joined the Union Army. The Army of the Ohio was responsible for this part of Kentucky and the protection of the L&N RR connecting Louisville to Nashville and Grant's army in TN. John Hunt Morgan's raiders went up and down the L&N RR and Captain Sam's 12th. Calvary kept up the chase. Morgan was finally captured in OH when he was trying to take his men to Gettysburg to assist Lee. Then, in a massive strategic move, Gen. Burnside takes the Army of the Ohio through the mountains of southeastern KY and northeastern TN to Knoxville. There, they will protect Sherman's rear as he goes into GA. Unfortunately, Sam contracts an illness (maybe yellow fever), and he is relieved from his duties and sent back to his farm. There he dies with in two months. Other known children: Elias 1837-, Virginia 1839-, Ephraim 1840-1923, and Sarah 1848
