Bio

Rita Allene “Mamalene” Davis, age 89, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, March 17, 2017 at Mission Manor Nursing Home in Mount Vernon, holding the hand of one of her beloved daughters. Allene was born July 21, 1927 in Pickton, Texas to the late Forney C. and Willie Mae Hitt Wilcox. When Allene was 17, she went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a telegraph operator throughout WWII and for a couple years after the war was over. Allene married the love of her life and her best friend, Thomas Joe Davis, on May 8, 1947 in Dallas, Texas. Together they would spend the next 54 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories. Thomas Joe preceded her in death on September 28, 2001. Allene was a longtime member of the Purley Baptist Church and the American Legion Ladies. She and Thomas were members of the square dance club. Allene was a dedicated mother who served on the PTO, the Girl Scouts, and any other activity her children were involved in. Back at home, Allene was a dedicated homemaker. She tended to the garden, milked the cows on the dairy, and took care of her six beloved children. Throughout her life, Allene was always the hostess of the party and loved providing for her guests. Even to the very end, Allene always wanted everyone around her to be happy and she had the most agreeable spirit of anyone, no matter the circumstance surrounding her. Allene leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to her Lord and her family for all to follow. Allene is survived by five children, Diane Newsom, and husband Waymon, of Purley, Jeanne Lawrence, of Hopewell, Kandy Cook, and husband Steve, of Sterling City, Vicki Kempf, and husband Jeff, of Sachse, and Lisa Davis of Gilmer; grandchildren, Trey Newsome, Lanny Lawrence, Chris White, Matt Lawrence, Wendy Smith, Bryan White, Torren Davis, Robert Kempf, Bridgette Romero, Derek LaCaze, Rachel Dickson, and Zane LaCaze; siblings, Glennis Kaczor of Mount Vernon, Glenn Wilcox, and wife Ruth, of Winnsboro, and Dell D’Lizarraga of Sulphur Springs; and by a host of great grandchildren and other relatives and very special friends. Allene was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Joe Davis; one son, Thomas Joe Davis II; and by siblings, LaTane Lemons, Princess Cope, Dee Majestic, Royce Wilcox, and Jean Carder. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon with Pastor Pepper Puryear officiating.
