Belle was the youngest child of Samuel C. Mankins, native of Kentucky, whose third great-grandfather arrived in Charles county, Maryland, in 1666. Her mother was Dotia Williams, daughter of Capt. Johnny Williams, Texas Ranger, killed in 1862 by Indians at Baby Head Mountain while rounding up "beeves" for the U.S. Army. Her son Ross noted that she could always beat his dad riding a horse. Not surprising since the Williams were known for their horse breeding and her father Sam staged the first horse race in Williamson county. She always rode sidesaddle and was said to be a good shot with a Winchester rifle and six-shooter. Her obituary was published in the Quanah (TX) Tribune-Chief , Feb. 15, 1935, p.1, col.6
