Bio

Shirley A. Hovdenes, age 85, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, died on Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Sturgis Regional Senior Care in Sturgis, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls with burial to follow at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls. The family will be present for visitation on Friday, January 1, 2016 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Shirley Audene Parks was born on October 11, 1930 in Sioux Falls, SD to Marvin and Lois (Howlett) Parks, the first of their 5 children. She was raised in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1948. She loved music and cherished her years playing clarinet and traveling with the Washington Marching Band. Paul Eugene Hovdenes proposed to Shirley at the Falls and they were married on September 10, 1950. They made their home in Sioux Falls and had Richard Dean, Paula Jo, Mary Beth and, 8 years later, John Vincent. They were also a foster home to many and Carole Almond lived with them for 6 years. As a family, they camped all over the United States and usually brought along a sister, Lee Ann, or a niece or nephew on their stationwagon trips. Besides her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives, neighbors and friends--Shirley’s life passion was serving God. She was the first full time secretary of Wesley United Methodist Church soon after she finished high school, and until her health required her to move to the Black Hills in November 2006, she gave an unbroken line of service to her church. Most of her adult life she worked as the church secretary and then office manager at Wesley, but that was just the start. She and Paul were youth counselors at church, she taught Sunday School and Bible School, and she took her grandchildren to church camp with her. Shirley had a beautiful voice and she sang in the choir for years. Shortly after her marriage, she joined the Women’s Society of Christian Service and held numerous positions. When that organization became United Methodist Women (UMW) she served in leadership positions on the local, state, and conference level. She attended the School of Missions, national UMW events, and went on a Mission trip to Alaska. Like her mom, Lois, Shirley was always baking cakes or pies or making candy for some church event. Shirley enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing cards and board games, but most of all Shirley loved people. And so, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care when we met about HER care, we were not surprised when she was more concerned about employees than she was about herself. Grateful for having shared her life are a daughter, Mary Beth Crowe, Rapid City, SD; son, John V. Hovdenes and his wife, Ann, Rapid City, SD; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Hovdenes, Rapid City, SD; a son-in-law, Skip Cady, Queen Creek, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three siblings: Joelene Johnson and her husband, Orlen, Lincoln, NE, Ron Parks and his wife Linda Mitchell, SD and Lee Ann McGregor, Grandview, MO; a foster daughter, Carole Almond, and a host of other relatives and friends. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Marvin & Lois Parks; husband, Paul Hovdenes, June 1993; son, Richard Hovdenes, January 1996; daughter, Paula Cady, April 1980; brother, Marvin Parks; sister-in-law, Carol Parks and brother-in-law, Dave McGregor.
