Bio

VICTORIA - Benedict 'Bennie' Martin Vitek, 85, passed away peacefully in his home on February 28, 2017. He was born to Martin and Albina (Mikes) Vitek in Fayetteville on January 15, 1932. He married Laureen Knesek on August 17, 1952 in Wallis, Texas. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years and children. His is also survived by his brother and sister. Bennie was known to his nine grandchildren as 'Popo,' and they were the pride and joy of his life- Naylene Felt, Travis Vitek, Renee Bain, Jay Thomas, Claire Pateman, Jacob Frederick, Michael Francese, Benjamin Frederick and Kasey Robey and his five great-grandchildren, Annalise, Hannah, Sam, Logan and Brenna. Even with an expansive family, Bennie had a way of making everyone feel like they were his #1. His happiest times were spent with his family. He especially loved snuggling up with his great-grandchildren. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary to see him on the floor playing with one of his great-grandchildren, even in his 80's. He was young at heart to the end! Bennie was a devoted husband and amazing father. He and Laureen were role models of what a strong and committed marriage is to their children. He showed his love for his wife by working hard throughout the years to provide for their family. His family will remember him as a witty, friendly and caring man; he taught them to treat others kindly and work hard to achieve their dreams. He raised his kids and grandkids to seek the Lord through prayer and caring for others. He was an excellent caregiver to fellow family members and led by example in this regard. He retired after 34 years from Tenneco (Tennessee Gas Pipeline) as a District Superintendent in 1989. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, KJT (Catholic Union of Texas), Knights of Columbus, and volunteered with Hospice of South Texas. Bennie loved the Lord and was a devout Catholic. Bennie enjoyed golfing, gardening, cooking, traveling and singing in the Holy Family Catholic choir and Hospice of South Texas choir. He was a self-taught pianist and enjoyed playing both the piano and mandolin. One of his many accomplishments was learning to fly small aircraft. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Dorothy Klecka, Millie Vitek and brothers: Justin, A.P., C.J, Libert and Dominic.
