At the time of her father's death (13 May 1927) her mother, Effie (Autry) Johnson was pregnant with her. Sometime in late September or early October of 1927, at least three of the family came down with typhoid fever; Howard Johnson (spent 46 days in the hospital and survived), Myrtle Emma Johnson (spent 28 days in the hospital, then died on 30 October 1927) and little Juanita Johnson had two visits by Dr. Walter P. Hailey to the home, but still died from typhoid fever. Even though Howard survived the typhoid fever damaged his heart, he would die at the age of 43 from a heart attack.
