Avie Gertrude Cook was the daughter of William Jackson "Jack" Cook & Mary Ellen King. Avie was married to 5 men. Her first marriage was to Elmore Ragland on July 4, 1908 in Titus Co., Texas. Elmore died shortly after and Avie was listed as a widow (Avy Ragland) living with her parents in the 1910 Texas Census, Titus Co., JP 5. Although not listed on the census with Avie, she had a young daughter named Bessie from her marriage to Elmore Ragland. This daughter was raised by Avie's parents and she took her maternal grandparents' surname of "Cook". Avie married a 2nd time to Lars William Love on June 19, 1911 in Titus Co., Texas. Avie was listed as Mrs. Avie Ragland on the marriage record. She and Lars had several children together prior to Lars' death on Oct. 17, 1926. Avie married a 3rd time to Sam Stroud about 1927. They had a daughter together and then divorced prior to 1930. Avie married a 4th time to Joseph Williams "Joe" Milner on Feb 5, 1930 in Miller Co., Arkansas. Avie was listed as Mrs. Ava Stroud on the marriage record. They had 1 son together and then divorced prior to 1940. There is a handwritten note by Avie that states "I married Joe Milner 4 time". It shows the dates of February 6, 1930, May 1943, March 1942, and Dec. 24, 1951. Avie married Oscar Thomas Voluntine (aka Valentine) about 1940. Oscar was listed as a boarder in her home on the 1940 Texas Census listing. Avie was recently divorced from Joe Milner. Avie's marriage to Oscar Voluntine was a short one and Avie remarried to Joe Milner in 1942. As per her handwritten note, Avie and Joe were married and divorced several times. Avie died on May 5, 1963 in Brownfield, Terry Co., Texas. She was buried in Center Grove Cemetery (Titus Co., Texas) next to her 2nd husband Lars Love. Avie's parents are also buried in this cemetery as is her 3rd husband Sam Stroud and her sons Marshall J. Love & Billy Joe Milner. --- Courtesy of CHB
