UNMARKED GRAVE Son of Charles Henry (b.~1844 PA) and Elizabeth Conner Burson (b.~1842 OH) Wilson; lived Saunders Co., NE Married Nov 28 1898 Valley Co., NE ------------------------------------- FARMER TAKES HIS OWN LIFE Bert Wilson Killed by Discharge of His Own Gun, Probably With Suicidal Intent Last week Thursday afternoon Bert Wilson, a well known farmer who lived a little west of the Bals ranch in Mira Valley, deliberately seating himself at the front door of his house, placed the muzzle of his gun to his head and discharged its contents into his brain. At the time of the tragedy he was alone, his wife and younger children being at the home of a neighbor and his oldest son, Charles, was in the corn field. The latter and a neighbor by, Hansen, were witnesses of the tragedy, though they were far from the house at the time. Mr. Wilson had been indisposed all day and had not gone to the field in the forenoon. At the dinner hour he had partaken sparingly of the meal and seemed to be ill, so the son went to the field again without him. A little later the Hansen boy came out to the field where Chas., was at work. While there they noticed Mr. Wilson come out the the door and seat himself as though to clean the gun which he carried. A moment later the report of the gun called their attention again to the house when they saw the father fall to the ground. Both young men ran as soon as possible to the house where an awful scene was presented to them. The charge of shot had blown the top of the unfortunate man's head completely off and the gruesome evidence of the tragedy was visible on the walls and on the ground. Dr. Mill was at once summoned and later Coroner Barta came to the scene. The conditions were so clearly pointing to suicide that no inquest was deemed necessary. A bottle of arsenic was by him and he had been spitting as though from the effect of poison. Charles also says that his father had had the poison earlier in the day, but had not to his knowledge taken any. The cause of the rash deed is undoubtedly due to financial troubles. Mr. Wilson was a hard working man, but had not been the most prosperous. Then, too, recent reverses due to hail and an unfavorable season had doubtless added to his despondency. His family relations were pleasant and there was no other know cause for his despair. George Gilbert Wilson was born in Saunders county March 21, 1877. When eleven years of age he came to Valley county with his parents and had lived here since. On November 28, 1898, he was married to Anna Pokorny and five children were born to them. One of these died in infancy. The surviving children are Charles, Emma, George and Joseph. The funeral was held from the home last Sunday at 2:00 pm. Dr. Allen Chamberlain officiating. The members of the Workman Lodge, of which he was a member, furnished the pallbearers. The body was laid to rest in the Vinton Cemetery. The Ord Quiz - Thur, Dec 30 1915
