Son of James Rush and Mary CAYLOR Rush. Husband of Debora J. HOLDEN Rush Father of six children Civil War Veteran Co I, 4th Iowa Infantry --------------- From military records: Rush, Frederick. Age 30. Nativity Tennessee. Enlisted Aug. 18, 1862. Mustered Sept. 18, 1862. Mustered out May 8, 1865, Petersburg, Va. -------------- Based on enlistment participated in Chickasaw Bayou, MS(Dec 62) Siege of Jackson, MS(May 63), Siege of Vicksburg(May-Jun 63), Corinth, Luka (Sep 63), Cherokee Station, AL(Sep 63), Lookout Mt,, TN(Nov 63), Sherman's Atlanta Campaign(May – Oct 1864). The 4th Iowa was in almost every battle and skirmish in that campaign. The regiment's numbers were reduced to only 200 from enlisted number of 1,184 following their gallant charge securing the famous DeGress Battery of 20 pounder Parrott Cannon at Atlanta. After Sherman secured Atlanta they joined Sherman's March to the Sea, the Siege of Savannah (Dec 1864), the Carolina's Campaign (Jan-Apr 1865) and triumphal Grand Review in Washington D.C. The New York Tribune spoke of the 4th and its brigade as "one of the bravest, truest, and most tenacious fighting brigades in the service".
