Leonard Kush, 78, of Genoa, was surrounded by his family at his home when he was called by his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Fr. Bill L’Heureux celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. vigil service, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday, all at the church. Len was born March 11, 1938, in Genoa to John and Mary (Czarnick) Kush. He attended grade school in Nance County District 54 and Krakow. He graduated from Genoa High School in 1954. After graduation, he worked in Omaha at Union Pacific for three years. He returned to Genoa to help on his parents' farm and also worked at Behlen. He was then hired by Loup Power District but continued farming and raising cattle. Len retired from Loup Power after 30 years of employment. In 1976, he met and married Connie Louis Roebuck in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Together they enjoyed family school activities, trips, baseball games and of course a few Husker games. He and Connie both sang in the church choir for 40 years. Len served on the district school board for many years and was instrumental in getting District 54 and District 2 consolidated and he contracted to build a new District 2 (Behlen building) along Highway 22. Len enjoyed the outdoors, deer and turkey hunting, fishing, taking care of his cattle, golf and baseball. He was an outstanding pitcher for the local baseball town team for many years. Baseball was his favorite sport and he enjoyed the Kansas City Royals and was able to attend many games. Len is survived by wife, Connie Kush of Genoa; sons, John (Linda) Roebuck of Columbus and Eric (Laura) Roebuck of Columbus; daughter, Linda Schendel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brothers, Lou (Dorothy) Kush of North Loup, Al (Marjorie) Kush of Genoa and Ray Kush of Genoa; sisters, Rita (Bud) Tate of Genoa and Betty Zakrzewski of Columbus; brother-in-law, Allen (Lois) Louis of Genoa; sister-in-law, Zan (Bill) Wehrbein of Hebron; grandchildren, Bradly (Adela) Ridgway, Zachary (Shaniah) Ridgway and Brittany (Bryan) Burt, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Heather (Mark) Wagner, Nathan Roebuck, Robert (Chelsey) Roebuck and Matthew Topinka, all of Columbus, Amber Conway of Council Bluffs, Iowa, James (Amanda) Roebuck of Genoa and Crystal (Luke) Morris, Brian Marker and Janelle (Matt) Walters, all of Columbus; 20 great-grandchildren who all loved their Great PaPa; and many nieces and nephews. Len was preceded in death by parents, John and Mary Kush; brothers, Bernard and Edward Kush; sister-in-law, Pat Kush; and brother-in-law, Ed Zakrzekski. The Columbus Telegram
