The Salt Lake Tribune Friday, May 24, 1963 Page 8C Ex-Official, 76, Dies of Cardiac Ills Agustus (Gus) Fernley, 76, 2181 Wilmington Circle (2185 South), former Salt Lake City auditor and retired chief deputy to the Salt Lake County assessor, died Thursday at 6:30 a.m. of a heart ailment at his home. Mr. Fernley had served 28 years in various capacities for both Salt Lake City and County. He had been chief deputy assessor for seven years previous to his retirement Jan. 1, 1963. He had been Salt Lake City auditor for three years from 1941 to 1943, after being appointed to fill an unexpired term, and had also served four years in the Utah State auditor's office beginning in 1932. Mr. Fernley began his career in 1908 when he opened a mercantile business in Beaver. In 1930, he became cashier of the Beaver State Bank. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1932 where he began his public service career. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mr. Fernley was a member of the high priest's quorum of the Parley's Third Ward at the time of his death. He had also served in the LDS Sunday School and had been secretary-treasurer of the Murdock Academy LDS school in Beaver for two years. He was born March 28, 1887, in Beaver, a son of Edward and Mary Bakes Fernley. He married Bertha V. Beck June 13, 1906, in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Fernley is survived by his widow; three sons and two daughters, Wendel B. Fernley, Phoenix; Donald A. Fernley, Phoenix; Ronald A. and Mrs. John Moore (Zola) Williams, all Salt Lake City; Mrs. Clayton L. (Mary Evelyn) Vagneur, Aurora, Calif., and four granddaughters. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at 260 E. South Temple, where friends may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Monday prior to services. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. The accompanying photograph was taken some years ago.
