Bio

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah-Zola Fernley Williams died August 15,1992. A daughter of Augustus and Bertha Beck Fernley, she was born, September 25, 1908, in Beaver, Utah. She received her education in the elementary and secondary schools of Beaver, Provo and Salt Lake City, being graduated from the LDS High School in Salt Lake City in 1926. Following her graduation from the University of Utah, B.A., class of '30, where she was affiliated with Chi Delta Phi and Alpha Delta Pi sororities, she became head of the English Department in Milford High School, where she taught for 10 years - stressing two truths: "that a room without books is as a body without a soul" and "that of all those arts in which the wise excel, nature's chief master-piece is writing well". She strove to give her students "occasion to think".On July 3, 1939, she was married to John Moore Williams, Attorney-at-law, in Austin, Nevada; marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She lived for a time in Concord, New Hampshire, and later in San Francisco, California, where her husband was an agent with the FBI in the Boston and San Francisco offices. During World War II, when her husband became a special agent for Army Intelligence in the Alaskan Theater, she reentered the school system, teaching again in Milford and Salt Lake City. At war's end, she and her husband made their home in Salt Lake City where Mr. Williams had entered private law practice. He later served as a Deputy County Attorney in the offices of Grover Giles. They were active in political circles. Mr. Williams died June 28, 1964. "One gift the Fairies gave Zola; the love of books, the golden key that opened enchanted doors." That love sustained her throughout the years. She believed as Flaubert had counseled in one of his letters; "Do not read as children do, to amuse yourself - no - read in order to live." She is survived by three brothers, Wendel B (and Alyce) Fernley, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Ronald A. (and Norma) Fernley and Edward R. (and Annette) Fernley, both Salt Lake City; a sister, Mary Evelyn (and Clayton) Vagneur, Colorado Springs, Colo.; four nieces and a nephew. Graveside services will be Thursday, August 20, 11 a.m., in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 North "N" Street. Funeral Directors: The Holbrook Funeral Chapel.
