Georgia Antonia Grimes Verkerk, of Sutter Creek, CA. went to be with her Heavenly Father in the company of her children at her home on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the age of 89. She was born in Omaha, NE on March 28, 1927 to Bert and Emma (Floral) Woodard. After a courtship that was not encouraged by her father, Georgia climbed out of her bedroom window on a rainy night in Muskogee, OK and bought herself a train ticket to Mobile, AL to be with the love of her life, Delmar Grimes. Being on furlough from the US Army, Delmar married her on May 19, 1943. Upon his return to civil life, they later settled in Hawthorne, NV. They moved to California in 1958 and remained in Amador County to raise their family of six children. After earning her LVN certificate under the Board of Vocational Nurses, Georgia aided her community from 1962 to 1982 by working in the nursery and delivery room at the old Amador Hospital in Jackson, CA. Crafting was Georgia’s passion, and handmade projects were never in short supply. Handy with a needle, she would sew clothes and accessories. She would hand-sew quilts, crochet, knit and embroider. She made beautiful porcelain dolls. She would fire them in a kiln, sand, paint, attach the eyes and wigs and made their costumes. She was awarded ribbons for her dolls at the Amador County Fair. She also had a love for nature which inspired her to capture the sky and landscape through her oil canvas paintings. She loved all flowers, but her deepest love was her Rose Garden. She was always collecting pebbles and made them into beautiful jewelry. Georgia had a fondness for all animals, especially her quarter horse, Princess, which she enjoyed riding. Singing, yodeling and playing the harmonica were among Georgia’s many talents. Georgia is survived by her children, Carol (Bob) Shelton of Durant, OK; Shirley (Clinton) James of Sutter Creek, CA; Steven (Sharon) Grimes of LaPlata, NM; Geri (John) Davis of Black Canyon City, AZ; Pamela (David) Gordon of Bowie, MD; 24 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Delmar Grimes in 1976 and Otto Verkerk in 1997; her son, Daniel Grimes in 2013 and her grandsons, Matthew Nunes in 2008 and Luke Davis in 2013. Friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Daneri Mortuary, 415 Broadway, Jackson, CA 95642. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, 14090 Irishtown Road, Pine Grove, CA 95665. Donations may be made to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties at P.O. Box 595, Jackson, CA 95642.
