Nannie Belle York, daughter of John Maynes York and Era Leta Lemmons, was born on August 26, 1894 and grew up in the Stewards Mill area. She married Jim Billie Bonner on September 10, 1913. Jim Billie and Nannie made their home in Bonnerville about two miles from the home of Young and Sallie Bonner. They were parents of 7 children: Era Hope; John Young; Laura Belle; Jim Billie, Jr.; Joel Andrew; Albert Thomas; Samuel Laird. After Jim Billie's death, Nannie worked hard to raise her young sons. Albert remembered, "Mama kept up with every penny we made….She'd go to the field and help us work. She worked all time. She made our shirts and shorts out of sacks and then she canned and washed." Joel Andrew said, "She was always easy-going and seldom got upset about anything or got mad unless something mighty bad happened." John said, "We'd make a crop and buy groceries all for $300 a year….We raised sweet potatoes and sorghum syrup. We made enough for the public. We had barrels and cans and jars of syrup. In the spring we'd kill a lot of hogs and we'd trade that meat for work. It was rough." Albert, who was eleven years old when his father died, said, "It was rough. And on top of paying for the funeral he [Jim Billie] owed $2000 to the First National Bank at Streetman and we had to pay that off. We finally paid it out." Nannie, who never remarried, moved to Fairfield; after living in the house at 446 West Main, she then moved to the house vacated by John and Thelma on North Hall Street. She belonged to Calvary Baptist Church. Her son Albert lived with her until he married; then her sister, Myrtle Ward, moved in with her. Nannie died in Fairfield on April 29, 1993 at age 98 and, over fifty-five years later, was buried beside Jim Billie.
