A Funeral Mass for Wilma Barta, 87, of Howells, will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Howells. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Wilma is the daughter of Emil and Anna (Uher) Brazda, Karel and was born May 3, 1927, in Colfax County. She attended Colfax County School District 35. She worked in Schuyler and Norfolk before her marriage to Richard Barta on Aug. 17, 1950, at Holy Trinity Heun. She and Richard lived on a farm northwest of Howells until 2010 when she moved to St. Joseph’s Home in West Point. Wilma had been a resident at Parkview Home in Dodge since August 2014 until her death on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015. She was a member of St. John’s Altar Society and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Wilma was an avid baker and her family and friends enjoyed the fruits of her labor. She loved to play cards, embroider and refinish wood furniture. Wilma is survived by three sons, Dick (Jean) Barta of Urbandale, Iowa, Adrian (Pam) Barta of Howells and Greg Barta of Blair; daughter, Janelle (Allen) Lang of St. Paul; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Raymond (Marcella) Karel of Columbus. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard (12/21/1995); sister, Helen (Brazda) Kucera; and brother, Otto Brazda. Svoboda Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
