Article about crash. Oroville Mercury Register, Saturday, 4 February 1976, page 1. LOCAL MAN DIES IN CRASH WITH LOADED LOGGING RIG A 22-year-old Oroville man died last night when his car crashed into the back of a loaded logging truck on Highway 70 at Georgia Pacific Way. John Clois Shelley, 4235 Foothill Blvd, was pronounced dead on arrival at Medical Center Hospital, where he was taken after firefighters pried his body from the wreckage of the 1972 Dodge Charger he had been driving. It was the first traffic fatality in the Oroville area this year. California Highway patrol traffic officers said Shelley apparently didn't touch the brakes of his car before the 6:30 pm collision. The man was driving south on 70 when he came upon the logging truck, driven by Donald John Schwann, 35, of Crescent Mills, officers said. Schwann had stopped his logging rig in the southbound lane of the highway with his left turn signal on, and was waiting for the northbound traffic to clear so he could make a lefthand turn onto Georgia Pacific Way, accourding to reports. The southbound traffic was passing the truck on the shoulder of the highway, officers said. Schwann told investigators that he started his turn after the northbound traffic cleared and then felt the truck "jump a little." He said he thought his transmission or brake had slipped and continued his turn. Then he spotted the wreck of Shelley's Charger behind him in his rear view mirror. A witness who was driving, along Feather River Boulevard, paralled to the highway, told officers he saw the truck's turn signal and that it appeared Shelley was driving without his car lights on. Officers said however that the elements of the shattered headlights in the wrecked car indicate the lights were on until the accident occurred. The crash however doused the lights and at least one other driver barely stopped in time to avoid hitting Shelley's disabled vehicle. Another driver was not so fortunate. Doyle W Sheppard, 48, of North Highlands, told officers, he was southbound on the highway just after the first collision and saw the wreck "at the last moment." Sheppard, driving about 50 miles an hour, hit his brakes, but not in time to avoid another crash. He estimated he hit the back of Shelley's car at about 10 miles an hour, but he and his passengers apparently escaped injury. Officers said the second collision caused minor damage to Sheppard's new Mercury Monarch, that Sheppard said had travelled only 900 miles. The first collision caused possible damage to the truck Schwann drove, but he apparently escaped injury, officers said. The crash mangled the front of Shelley's car and flattened the dashboard. Several highway patrol officers converged on the scene as did the rescue unit from the Oroville Fire Department, a Butte County Fire Department engine, sheriff's deputies and two ambulances. The Oroville rescue team worked for between 10 and 15 minutes in a light spasmodic rainfall to pry the Charger's dashboard forward enough so that they could remove Shelley's body. Funeral arrangements for Mr Shelley, a woodworker, are pending at Scheer Memorial Chapel. He was born May 21, 1953 and is survived by his father, Hershel Shelley, of the home.
