Mercedes E. "Merce" Johnson, 86, passed away peacefully at a local care facility on Saturday, July 23, 2016, from complications of Alzheimer Disease. Funeral mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Parish, 1927 S.W. Green Oaks Blvd. in Arlington. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N Davis Dr. in Arlington. Merce was born to the late Bernard and Elva O'Brien on Dec. 31, 1929, in Platteville, Wis. She and her family owned and operated the former O'Brien Grocery at 1573 Elm Street, Dubuque, Iowa. That is where she met the love of her life, Fred H. Johnson. They were married Sept. 9, 1950, and first settled in Ames, Iowa, where Merce helped put Fred through Iowa State College by working at several department stores. They later moved to Arlington where Merce was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She was an active member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church and later St. Joseph Catholic Parish. As her children grew older she again entered the workforce and became a mainstay of downtown Arlington, having worked at Ben Franklin Five and Dime, Watson Department Store and finally retiring from the former Central Library. Merce was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John D. "Dean" O'Brien and Bernard W. "Bill" O'Brien; granddaughter, Cathy Johnson; and great grandson, Caden Johnson. Survivors: Left to cherish her memory is husband of 65 years, Fred; daughter, Jane Hervey and husband, Oney, of Gainesville; sons, Steve Johnson and wife Bonnie of Hurst; Bob Johnson of Arlington and Bill Johnson and wife, Liz, of Grand Prairie; sister, Maxine Svehlak and husband, Stan, of Duncanville; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and friends.
