Bio

US MERCHANT MARINE WWII ————————————————— Aldrich Norbert Mergl, 88, passed away peacefully in Centennial, CO, on June 12, 2016. He had been challenged with Alzheimer's disease, for which he had been receiving care at his assisted living center. Al was born on June 6, 1928, in Brainard, NE, to Josephine (Kantor) and Alois Mergl. He left high school to travel the world through service to the United States Merchant Marines during WWII. Al married Betty Sedlacek on Feb. 9, 1951. He made a career driving truck for sand and gravel companies, first in Tacoma, WA, and then Colorado Springs and Denver, CO. He raised six children with Betty in Deer Trail, CO, and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Al's favorite food was dessert and Jolly Ranchers candy. He never met a crossword puzzle he couldn't solve and was an avid watcher of Wheel of Fortune. He will be remembered for his constant sense of humor and proud sense of Czechoslovakian heritage. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty and son Allan, sisters Jean and Marcella, brothers Joe and Louie. He is survived by his daughters Christine Donovan (Dennis) and Meredith Mergl Lopez (Temple), and sons Ken (Kathy), Gerald (Linda), Brian (Tim), sisters Marie Witzel and Marge Novotny, 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. His family would like to thank Peak View Assisted Living in Centennial, CO, for their end-of-life care. Memorial services, which will also include Al's wife, are open to friends and family. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, July 1, 10:00 am, Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver. Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Association of Colorado.
