From The Clayton (NM) Leader, Jun 8, 1938: Clayton Pioneer Dies in Texas Mrs. Thomas Freeman Martin passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. U. Bridges, in Marshall, Texas, Tuesday May 31. Mary E. Palmer was born in Mississippi, September 16, 1857, and in a few months would have been 81 years of age at the time of her death. At an early age she with her parents moved to Texas, and at Austin she was united in marriage with T. F. Martin who passed away in Clayton a number of years ago. Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Martin came to New Mexico and filed on a homestead near Seneca; this later became the property of Walter Oldham. They moved to Clayton, building the home which is now owned by A. J. Krehbiel. Early in life Mrs. Martin united with the Baptist church and lived a beautiful Christian life through the remaining years of her life. She is survived by four daughters: Mrs. J. L. Barton and Mrs. J. A. Barton of Seneca; Mrs. C. U. Bridges of Marshall, Texas; and Mrs. V. D. Mann of Taylor, Texas, by 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also by three sisters: Mrs. Walter Giles of Bernalillo; Mrs. W. M. Eddy of Kenton, Okla.; and Mrs. M. L. Moody of Sutherland Springs, Texas; by three brothers: D. H. Palmer of Minard, Texas, W. B. Palmer of San Antonio, and A.S. Palmer of Clayton. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Clayton Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. C. R. Barrick of Portales, with interment in the Clayton Cemetery. To the sorrowing relatives is extended the sympathy of the entire community, in which the Leader joins. (Info furnished by Dawn Kelley)
