Elmer Young Payne Sweetwater - Elmer Young Payne, 77, a resident of Sweetwater for 62 years, died at 3:15 a.m. Monday at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McCoy Funeral Home. Officiating will be Roger Reinohl, minister of Normandy Ave. Church of Christ, assisted by Lewis Hunter of Brownfield. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Born May 15, 1908 in Ira, he married Faye Cantwell on Sept. 20, 1930. She died Sept. 16, 1964. He later married Virginia Odom Berry on June 26, 1965 in Abilene. He was retired from employment with U.S. Gypsum Co. for 42 years. He was a member of Normandy Ave. Church of Christ, Rotary Club and was an instructor for the Dale Carnegie club. Survivors include his wife; daughter, Nelda Vella of Seattle, Wash.; step-daughter, Barbara Lankford of Southland; a step-son, David Berry of Woodinville, Wash.; a brother, Jim of Perris, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Joel Corder, S. C. Head, Hugh King, Melvin Martin, Freddie Smith and Don Gann. Honorary pallbearers will include Hudson Taylor and employees of U. S. Gypsum Co.
