Herman A. Janssen, 71, of Grand Island died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare Lakeview in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. David McCreary officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greeley Cemetery.Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island. Mr. Janssen was born July 5, 1935, at Ericson to Otto and Ethel (Pratt) Janssen. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Carolyn of Grand Island; a son, Mark Janssen of Cairo; a daughter, Renee Janssen of Grand Island; and a brother, Fred Janssen of Greeley. Also surviving are numerous relatives and friends. He grew up and received his education in Greeley County. He was united in marriage to Carolyn A. Poppe on Aug. 8, 1970, in Grand Island. The couple resided in Grand Island, where he worked for the Nebraska Veterans Home, Chief Industries and the Grand Island public schools. He retired in 1985 due to poor health. He had been a resident of Lakeview since January 2006.He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed doing his woodwork, going to softball games and playing cards. He was also an avid Husker football fan and enjoyed attending Islander sporting activities.He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Louise; and an infant brother.Memorials are suggested to Faith United Methodist Church..
