The Deseret News Wednesday, August 23, 1995 Alice Marie Smith Sheya, born October 18, 1914, passed away on August 20, 1995, following a long illness. While a resident of St. Joseph's Villa at the time of death, Alice lived with her husband of 51 years, Mitchell George Sheya, in Salt Lake City, prior to his death in July, 1993. A native of Salt Lake, Alice was born into a large family and spent much of her childhood on the family's sheep ranch in Duchesne County. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1935, she began a career in education that spanned over 30 years. She also worked with the Utah Council of Campfire Girls prior to her retirement in 1979. Alice is survived by her sister, Phyllis Stewart; her brother, Scott Smith; her three children and their spouses, Norman Sheya and wife, Marci, of Carlsbad, Calif.; Michelle Lavin and husband, David, of Tustin, Calif.; Paule Hewlett and husband, Michael, of Houston, Texas. Her death is also mourned by her six grandchildren. A memorable example of a strong, intelligent woman, Alice Sheya gifted her family with her wit, strong work ethic, love of learning and her unconditional love. As she joins Mitch and finds peace, the family wishes to express gratitude to her kind caregivers at St. Joseph's and acknowledge all the friends and family members who have offered support in recent years. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 25th, 12 noon, Larkin Sunset Lawn Chapel, 2350 East 1300 South, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
