McAlester News Cap. Apr. 17, 1996 Walter M. Mantooth, 89, of McAlester, died Monday at McAlester Retirement and Care Center. Born June 7, 1906 in Melissa, Texas, he was the son of Terrell Lee and Minnie Vaughan Mantooth. He and his family moved to Arpelar in 1918 and he married Josephine Logan on July 26, 1925. They were co-owners of The City Cafe for 30 years. He served on the Board of Directors of Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College and was also a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Rebekahs, McAlester Chamber of Commerce and the Pittsburg County Cattlemens Association. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law; two daughters and son-in-law; a sister; three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Sunday School Class of his church. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Louis Mantooth; and two sisters, Pearl Hartsfield and Grace Henson. Funeral services will be at 2pm, Thursday at First Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
