Elmer or Charles Elmer Philby is recorded as a son of Adelia E. Cowger in several Doniphan County, Kansas census reports. Adelia E. Philby, widow of John F. Philby of Co. I, 4th Iowa Cavalry, received a Civil War widow's pension March 28, 1894, filed from Kansas. John F. Philby was recorded in an 1890 GAR record from the Nathan Price Post # 283 at Wathena. He was age 50, born in Indiana, an engineer who resided in Elwood (Doniphan County) Kansas. Adelia, who had remarried to W. H. Cowger, is recorded in the 1930 Doniphan County, Kansas census, age 72, residing with her son, Elmer Philby, 50. Adelia E. Cowger is also recorded in a Civil War Pension Index for remarried widows. She filed again in 1916 as the widow of John F. Philby. In February 1940 Charles Elmer Philby filed his World War II draft registration in New Orleans, but was also listed in the town of Elwood in the 1940 Doniphan County, Kansas census. Charles Edwin Philby was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, on April 30, 1953. He had never married, according to the death certificate and census reports. He had worked at a variety of jobs, including, news boy, baker, piano tuner, steam railroad car repairer, employee of Gambino's Restaurant in New Orleans, and as a musician. The parents of Charles Elmer Philby were not known at the time of his death. He resided in the Ryan Hotel in St.Joseph. The Buchanan County coroner signed his death certificate due to the cause of death. --- He had gone to the Missouri River and shot himself in the head with a 20 gauge shotgun. Adelia E. Cowger died in 1936 in Elwood, Kansas. She is recorded as Adelia Philby in the 1895 Kansas state census. Her infant daughter Philby is buried in Bellemont Cemetery, Doniphan County, Kansas. Irene Philby, age 41, is recorded as the wife of John F. Philby in the 1880 census in Cass County, Nebraska. They are also recorded together in the 1870 census in Cass County, Nebraska. Their children in 1880 are recorded as Sarah, 15; James, 13; Enoch, 11; Alexander, 8; & Robert, 4. "Dela" [Adelia] Stephens, 22, born in Ohio, is recorded as the sister of Lewis Vanlue, 25, also born in Ohio, in the 1880 Rulo, Richardson, Nebraska census. She is recorded as a widowed music teacher. Charles Stephens is recorded as 4 months old, a nephew of Lewis Vanlue. It is possible that Charles' birth name was Stephens. James [Philby] married Adelia Vanlue on September 26, 1883 at Rulo, Nebraska. (Nebraska marriage index) Lewis and Adelia Vanlue are recorded as children of William & "Soshey" Vanlue in the 1860 census in Hancock County, Ohio, and in the 1870 census in Richardson County, Nebraska. Other siblings recorded were James K., Margaret, William, & Douglas. William Vanlue married Presachey Tidwig Brown in 1836 in Hancock County. (Ohio marriage index) NOTE: If the birth date is correct, it is probable that Charles Elmer Philby was born to the first wife of James F. Philby. ============= 12 Mar 2019 Thanks to Roy Mergel for the following correction. Suggested edit: Mother's name Adelia "Vanlue" Philly Cowger. Contributor: Roy Mergel (47016057) -
