Ben Z. Janulewicz, 95, of Norfolk, formerly of Loup City, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at the Homestead Assisted Living Residence in Norfolk. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Loup City with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 48 and VFW Post 7027, both of Loup City. Mr. Janulewicz was born August 23, 1908, in a sod house east of Loup City on the family homestead, the son of Ignac and Katherine (Sydzyik) Janulewicz. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Headlee of Grand Island; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Janulewicz of Norfolk and Tim and Trudy Janulewicz of Grand Island; and a sister, Victoria Lewandowski of Loup City. He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha E. Janulewicz December 14, 1997. Ben attended rural schools in the area and latter attended Loup City High School. In 1934, he left the family farm and went to work for Floyd Lewandowski Trucking. He married Bertha E. Bukowski June 30, 1941, at Loup City. He entered the U.S. Army March 12, 1942, and served in Ireland and England in the 994th Heavy Maintenance Company. He was discharged November 10, 1945, as a Tech Sgt. On returning to Loup City he worked for Loup Valley Trucking and later as a bread route driver for Rainbow Bread. He then managed the American Legion Club in Loup City for a number of years until his retirement. He moved to Norfolk in July 2000. He was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church; a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 48, VFW Post 7027 and the DAV, all of Loup City. He also served as commander of the VFW and DAV, and as a Loup City Volunteer Fireman for many years. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. He loved to go on trips, and he and Bertha loved to entertain and play cards. In addition to his wife, Bertha, he was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Joseph and Bernard Janulewicz; two sisters, Eleanor Damratowski, and Clara Janulewicz; and 10 brothers, Stanley, Alozy, Floyd, Frank, Joseph, Ignatz, Anton, Steven, Harry and Daniel Janulewicz.
