Betty Irene Christiansen Matthews, age 93, of Lehi, died April 13, 2016, in American Fork of natural causes. She was the twelfth child and third daughter of Niels Peter Jr. and Matilda Stagg Christiansen and was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah, on Sunday, September 24, 1922. She grew up on a sheep and cattle ranch in Ibapah, Tooele County, Utah with her parents, 9 brothers and 2 sisters. At age 13 she moved with her parents to American Fork, Utah. It is there that she met her sweetheart, Reed Matthews. She attended schools in Salt Lake and became an accomplished comptometer operator. She worked several jobs her favorite being Auerbach’s in Salt Lake City. In an effort to help during the war she drove a forklift at the Clearfield Navy Depot. She married G. Reed Matthews February 13, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised their family in Pioche, Nevada and American Fork, Utah. Betty, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served faithfully in many church callings. She was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was employed for 10 years at Meadow Gold Dairies. She and her husband retired in 1984. They served continuous LDS missions from 1984 to 2003, including two missions to New York, Rochester area and multiple Family History Missions. Her family loves her dearly, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love and cheerful disposition brightened the lives of those around her. She is survived by her sons, Glenn (Mary Jo), American Fork; Kevin (Mary Jo), Midvale; daughters, Marilyn Dawn (Brian) DeHart, Sandy; Teresa (Robert) Frederickson, Lindon; Jullee (Jeff) Webster, Saratoga Springs; 16 grandchildren, and 50 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, 11 brothers and sisters, grandson Mark Matthews, and son-in-law Richard Griffin. She was the last surviving descendant of a great and mighty generation. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lehi Stake Center, 200 North Center. Family and friends may call Sunday evening from 6–8:00 p.m. at Wing Mortuary, 118 East Main, Lehi, Utah and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday morning.
