Vernie was physically impaired; he had a serious limp. And he was socially and mentally off a little, but he always seemed to be happy and welcoming to people. He lived with his mother on East M Street in Ord. The home was short way west of what was then the Ord City trash dump ground on the west edge of the North Loup River. In acceptable weather. Vernie walked to the dump and spent his days there. He was sort of the unofficial caretaker of the dump. He greeted everyone who came to dump trash, and often pointed out a good place to dump it. He liked to chat with them, often telling about some bad wreck that had happened in or near Ord. The stories might be a few weeks old, but he would tell them anyway. He was kind and helpful and friendly. He dressed like a hobo, but that was okay. He was happy. He was a fixture at the dump and people seemed to accept him well. Contributor: Nebord (4886444)
