Bio

Winslow Turner II was born in 1786, in Pembroke, Plymouth Co, MA., to Winslow Turner I and Molly Standish Turner. In 1829, at age 43, he brought his family and colonists from Lincoln Co, MO., for Stephen F. Austin, down to Stephen Austin's Second Colony on the Colorado River in Texas by way of a wagon train in December 1829. They crossed the Sabine River by log rafts and arrived in Texas in 1823. They found that there was not enough room so some of them, including himself and his son Winslow III, went further south to Green DeWitt Colony in Gonzales Co. Winslow II built and owned the Turner Hotel in Gonzales. Winslow II was elected the first regidor,of the Ayuntamiento (municipal government) of Gonzales. When the call went out to defend Gonzales and help retain their little cannon, his son, Winslow Turner III became of of the "Old eighteen" (click on picture of monument on the right to view the names). The 18 delayed the 150 Mexican dragoons sent by their government to demand the cannon for two days which allowed the town to mass volunteers to drive the enemy back. The Gonzales battle became know as the Lexington of the Texas Revolution and gave the world a new battle flag and new war cry, "Come and Take it" and the Texas Revolution against the Mexican government was started. Winslow and two of his sons defended Gonzales and his two sons went on to fight with Gen Sam Houston at San Jacinto. Sam Houston had the people of Gonzales burn the town and flee in what became know as "The Runaway Scape" from Gen Santa Anna's troops. He died and was buried somewhere around Edna, Jackson Co, TX by his family just hours ahead of the approaching Mexican troops. His wife, Elizabeth and family went to live in Texana. ********* Winslow Turner Sr. and wife Elizabeth arrived in the DeWitt Colony 4 Dec 1829 with a family of 8 according to land grant records. His league was north of Gonzales on the San Marcos River. Son Winslow Turner Jr. also received a fourth sitio with arrival listed as 18 Nov 1829 on the east bank of the Guadalupe River near the current Gonzales and Guadalupe County line. The Turners first arrived in Austin's Colony in 1827 and lived on the Colorado River. Turner owned and operated a hotel in inner Gonzales town which was on St. John Street. He was a regidor in the appointed Gonzales Ayuntamiento of 1832. As described above, Winslow Turner Jr. married Sarah Sowell in 1831. Winslow Turner, Jr. is buried in the State Cemetery in Austin.
