Bio

Lucian B. Applegate, son of Lindsay Applegate who crossed the plains with his brothers Jesse and Charles in 1846. They eventually settled in the Rogue River Valley. In 1860, the family, with four yoke of oxen, started over the Greensprings Mountain, (the Applegate Trail), to estalish the Klamath Indian Agency of which Lindsay was the first agent. June 1866 Lucian Applegate married Margaret Ellen Grubb. They had six children: Elmer, Minnie, Fred L., Evelyn, Bessie and Elsie. They began a ranching operation in the Upper Swan Lake Valley, calling it Brookside Ranch, their branding iron was an arrowhead. The title of Major was won by Lucien during the Civil War, when he was among the Oregon Volunteers. Submitted by Jeanie Sawyer ____________________________________________
