ASTHMA AND FLU CAUSE DEATH OF JOHN LONG Elderly Farmer Passes at Hospital After 2 Weeks Illness; Came From Madison Co. John Long, sixty years old and a respected farmer of this community since 1925, passed away at the Ord hospital at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, after an illness of two weeks with influenza. A chronic sufferer with asthma, Mr. Long was hard hit by the flu when he contracted the ailment. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church yesterday with Rev. Mearl C. Smith in charge and interment was in Ord cemetery. Deceased was born in Germany May 12, 1872 and came to this country when eleven years old with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Long, settling in Madison county, Nebraska. There most of his life was spent. On Nov. 7, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Psota, who is a sister of the Psota boys of Valley county. To them were born seven children, Mrs. John Oltmer, of Leigh, Nebr., Robert, Johnnie, Anna, Rudolf [sic], Gertrude and Addie, all at home. Besides his widow and children Mr. Long is mourned by two grandchildren, Geldine and Velma Oltmer, and by six brothers and two sisters, Henry, Jacob, Ernest, Fred and Charles Long, all of Madison, Mrs. Katie Schau [sic] and Mrs. Leana Aplydinger [sic], both of Spencer. In 1925 the Long family came to Valley county, Mr. Long having purchased the Bair ranch southeast of Ord where he made his home until his fatal illness. With the exception of a few years spent in the meat market business, Mr. Long's whole life was spent in farming. He was well-to-do and a substantial citizen in every way, respected and liked by all who knew him In early life he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith but since coming to the Ord Community Mr. Long had attended the Methodist church.
