During the Civil War he participated first with the state militia, then as a soldier of the Confederacy. In 1867 he became superintendent of the Miami schools, serving 6 years. He also taught school for 16 years. He started his banking career in 1880 in Miami. He and his wife adopted Maude, the orphaned daughter of William and Adeline (Guinn) Hawkins. At the time of his death, Wheeler was a retired banker. He had lived in Kansas City for 3 years. Mrs. Lex McDaniel of Kansas City was death certificate informant. He was living with his adopted daughter in Kansas City.
