Alfred Wheeler was born in Garrard Co., KY, the fourth child of Thomas Wheeler and Clary Harris. When he was only five-years old, his father, serving in the War of 1812, was killed in Dudley's Defeat, near Ft. Meigs, OH. His mother was left with six young children. In 1819, Clary, her father (Jonathan Harris), and five of her children set out for Saline Co., MO. Her oldest daughter, Susannah, had married William J. Wolkskill in 1817, and were already settled in the Miami area. Alfred Wheeler took up farming, eventually settling in the Miami bottom, growing the farm to 500 acres. In 1830, he married Ruth Perry, born in Cooper's Fort, Howard Co., MO, and they raised four sons and two daughters to maturity: Humphrey, Cyrena, Elizabeth Ann, William H., Amos, and Alfred L. Alfred, Sr., was also a storyteller and local historian. More than a few times he was cited by the Miami News as a source for area information. Alfred Wheeler died on Christmas eve, 1882, in Miami. He was the grandson of Benjamin Wheeler, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, from Virginia.
