Bio

Ruth Perry was born inside Cooper's Fort, Howard Co., MO, the oldest of ten chidren born to Samuel Smith Perry and Elizabeth Ferril. She was the first white child born of American parets west of St. Charles, MO. When Ruth was 18 years old, she married Alfred Wheeler, and remained in Miami, MO, the rest of her life. She gave birth to eight children, six living to maturity. Her oldest son, Humphrey, died at the age of 23, just as he was entering upon his studies for the ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The other five children all remained in the Miami area, giving Ruth 26 grandchildren, plus two adopted grandchildren.
