SCHUYLER — Thomas Ray “Tom” Spale, 67, of Schuyler died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at CHI Memorial Hospital in Schuyler. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Divine Mercy Parish St. Mary’s Church-Schuyler. The Rev. Gerry Gonderinger will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Schuyler. Kracl Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Spale was born Sept. 25, 1948, in Columbus to Joe and Bridget (Tajthman) Spale. He attended Schuyler Grade School and graduated from Schuyler High in 1966. He joined the United States Navy in 1967 and served until 1971, earning the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, one Bronze Star and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea). Tom attended Midland College and played football. On Sept. 12, 1992, he married Judy Olmer in Humphrey. He worked for many years at the Schuyler Excel Plant as a lugger, later at Coufal Lumber and various construction jobs. Tom coached football, track and wrestling at Schuyler High School for 25 years and was a volunteer coach for Schuyler youth wrestling. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Schuyler VFW. He was awarded a silver medal at the Nebraska High School Wrestling Tournament in 1966, was National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008, and Region 6 Assistant Coach of the Year in 1995-1996, 1996-1997 and 2007-2008. Tom is survived by his wife, Judy of Schuyler, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Judy and Leonard Svoboda of Omaha and Patti Svoboda, Dennison; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Don of Norfolk, Terry and Sherri Spale of Schuyler, Fred and Pam Spale of Fremont, and Duane and Janet Spale of Grand Island; a sister-in-law, Gwen Spale, Schuyler; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gerald, Joe and Kenny; a sister-in-law, Mary Spale; a brother-in-law, Ed Svoboda; a nephew, Dan Svoboda; and a great-nephew, Cash Coolidge.
